"SOME NOTES ABOUT THE SEGA DREAMCAST
PRE-LAUNCH REFURB UNIT

In order to meet your deadlines, this Dreamcast unit has certain elements which will be different from the version available on the 9/9/99 launch date. Please read the following notes carefully in order to put the forthcoming Dreamcast capabilities in perspective:

  • The US rental units we have available only have 33.6K modems and do not come with VMUs for saving games. Also, the US rental unit cannot connect to the Internet since they are purely for consumer sampling purposes.
  • The US rental units we have available for media have not been fully-tested by the Underwriter's Laboratories (legally we have to tell you that in case you try to test it in your bathtub and there was no label on it telling you not to).
  • Hollywood Video stores will only feature Sonic Adventure Limited. This is NOT the full version of Sonic Adventure that will be available at launch. It is not reviewable as Sonic Adventure, since upgrades are being implemented. You should only view it as a rental game that consumers can check out at Hollywood Video. Your copies of the fully reviewable Sonic Adventure will come in about two weeks
  • Sonic Adventure Limited will not play in the Japanese Sega Dreamcast unit, even with a key disc.

HOOKING UP YOUR LOANER SEGA DREAMCAST UNIT
In your hands is the SEGA DREAM CAST, the freshest and fastest new console on the market. If you've
never hooked up a gaming console, don't be frightened--it's easier than catching a frisbee .
Step 1: Unloading the components. You should have:
a. The Dreamcast. It's the big square white thing.
b. A controller. This is the modem day equivalent of a joy stick.
c. VMU (the Visual Memory Unit). It sounds and looks sophisticated, but it's a simple-to-use
device for saving your game.
d. A game (they're stored on Compact Discs, but they won't work in your CD player).
e. Modem cord. If you look at the side of the Dreamcast, you will find a little jack for plugging in
the modem cord. Don't bother with connecting it yet, since it won't be able to access the Internet
until the 9/9/99 launch date. However, at that time, the Dreamcast will be a vehicle for plenty of
Internet activities, including e-mailing, chatting, and accessing the Dreamcast Online gaming
network.
Step 2: Hooking up the Dreamcast
You might start by connecting the controller to the Dreamcast, and then plugging the Dreamcast
into a wall socket. The red/white/yellow cables go into the corresponding color-coded Video In outlets on
your TV or VCR. As we mentioned above, ignore the modem cable (it resembles a phone cord).
Step 3: Operating the Dreamcast.
Before turning on the power, insert a game into the Dreamcast (it's just like putting a CD into a
disc player). Next, press the power button and your Dreamcast will come to life! The Dreamcast will
request certain information, such as the time and date. Use the little joystick on the upper left side of the
controller to select the proper numbers. When this is complete, press the red "A" button to accept and move
on. The "A" button is an all-purpose button for most functions, unless the game asks for you to press
"Start."
Step 4: The Games.
Since Sega Dreamcast games are still being finished, we only have two for you to test out at this
point. To play Sonic Adventure, just pop in the disc and play! To operate Sega Bass Fishing, pop in the
system disc, wait until the screen reads "complete", and then open up the Dreamcast and switch discs.
Step 5: Problem Solving.
If you insert a game and then press "power," but nothing shows up on your screen after a minute
or so, you've got a problem. First, make sure your TV is tuned into the same channel as the Dreamcast (try
channel 3 or 4 ). Next, make sure there are no scratches on the disc and that all of the cables are in the
proper slots. If the game is a US version, it won't work in a Japanese Dreamcast, unless special
modifications have been made. Chanting "Sonic is God" is sometimes known to fix problems, but try the
other options first.

Character Notes on how to play
Big
You need to cast his lure in the water.
X/B button casts his lure. Press and hold the X button to display the cursor. Move it to your target location
and release the X button to cast.
In fishing mode, the analog will move the rod, and X/B will reel slowly, and A will reel quickly.
Move the lure around to get the attention of a fish or froggy. Once they come close, hold down on the
analog pad. Once they bite, reel them in. Make sure to stop reeling if the tension is all the way up on the
meter, or your line will break.

Knuckles
Knuckles is trying to find the 3 emeralds. The three shapes at the bottom of the screen is the Emerald
Radar. As you hear the sounds and one of the shapes starts to blink, you are getting close to an emerald.
The distancing goes like this:
Blue Green Yellow Pink Red
In the relative area Getting Closer.. . Ve Close! Almost there! Standin ri ht on it
Once you get an emerald blinking red, you should be able to see it. If you can't see it, then that means it's hidden. It can be in an item or an enemy, try punching whatever is around. If you can dig in that area, press the X and A button together and Knuckles will dig.
Knuckles can also climb most walls by jumping or gliding into them.
In Mid-air, if you hit the A button again, you will glide. You must hold the A button down to keep gliding. Once you let go, he will fall down.

Playing through the adventure mode
To get you started, here is the first few things you need to do to start a new adventure with a couple of the characters ... To begin a new adventure, go to the Select a file screen. From here pick one that has most of the circles transparent. From here you should only be able to pick Sonic, it won't let you select anyone else at this time. When you pick Sonic, watch the movie and fight chaos. Jump and use the homing attack to defeat him. Once you are in the game world, you have to go to save Tails. Go to the beach and you will get to the first level. Complete the level and you appear back near the hotel . .. (Now Tails is Selectable if you exit the game) From here you need to take the train to the Mystic Ruins. Get in the train and you will automatically go there.
In the mystic ruins, go up towards Tails Workshop and you will trigger a Robotnik battle. After defeating him, go to the door of Tails' workshop and there will be a green stone with a leaf on it. Pick that up and go to the cave which is to the right of the waterfall. Place the stone down on the machine and wind will blow up through the cave. This is where the second level is. Once you complete that level, you have to go back to Station Square on the train. Now it's night time and the casino is open, but the door is broken. Also, the barricade is gone, and you can go down the street. Go to the open sewer hole and jump in. Inside you will find a light with a power up inside. Pick it up and you can now perform the spin dash attack. Hold down X or Band Sonic will glow with lights flying around him. When he says ready, let go of the button and he will follow any trail of rings nearby.
Go to the Casino (either by the train station (downstairs) or through the hotel (the door to the right of the elevators)) and press the button on the ground. Rings will appear to your right and you can use your attack to follow them up and press the button above the Casino. This takes you to stage 3.
In the Casino, you need to take 400 rings to the bank, so you can reach the Chaos Emerald. This will allow you to exit the level. Rings can be acquired in the pinball games or by walking around the Casino.
Once you leave, a ice statue (like the previous wind one) will appear in the alley. Get it and go to the
Mystic Ruins. Find the cave with the Ice machine and you can get to the 4th level ...
